Textbook: Barwise and Etchemendy’s Language, Proof, and Logic. Note: you must get a new edition of the book with a CD. You will be unable to do the homework without it.
Grades: 50% of the grade is based on homework, which is due the Monday morning one week after it is assigned. Homework is turned in over the internet. Note that each person's disk has an ID; this, plus your computer's clock, allows the electronic grader to determine if people turn in other people's files. 25% of grade is based on the midterm exam. 35% of grade is based on final exam, which is Thursday, Dec. 11, 12:30-2:30 PM. Note: this is a possible 110%!!! The grade scale is standard, e.g. 90-110% = A, 80-89 = B, etc.
The instructor reserves the right to scale up grades, if students that attend class and particpate are on a borderline, their grade will be scaled up.
Students are expected to learn how to use the software themselves. Important "You try it" sections are on: pp. 8, 24, 58, 60, 64, 69, 72, 76, 80, 100, 114, 116, 143, 145, 147, 151, 153, 156, 159, 160, 161, 168, 207, 208, 210,238,240,245,272, 286, 291,295,305,344,345,349,356.
